History

HPS was founded in 1949 by the Southwestern Michigan District Hospital Council, with the assistance of a grant from the Kellogg Foundation. At that time, HPS was a surgical supplier to its member hospitals.

In 1971, the emphasis changed from surgical supplier to coordination office, allowing the individual purchasing departments to band together and begin negotiating group contracts. Warehousing was subsequently phased out.

In 2003, HPS affiliated with MedAssets. A national GPO employing a multi-vendor contracting strategy, this partnership provides a comprehensive contracting solution, helping customers reduce expenses in their major spend areas.   This affiliation offers HPS members access to the MedAssets contract portfolio.

With a diverse solid membership base, comprehensive programs, increasing purchase volume and forward-thinking staff, HPS is poised to remain a leader in the industry.
